"A partnership with parents is critical to all success in our schools and classrooms; Kyle is technology driven in a classroom, but is trying to bridge the gap between what parents deceive as too much technology for their child or how technology is used best for learning. Kyle believes that many parents believe that its the schools responsibility to convey knowledge about what their students are doing on social media. Kyle presents this information a lot in his work shops that he teaches.
So how did he try and fix this issue? He formed a group of elementary school students and had them come up with an agenda about topics in technology that their parents needed to know. The agenda consisted of knowledge about iPads, Chromebook, G suite, chrome, and other apps, This is called "proactive instead of reactive" Kyle says. |
Parents are the most unserved group in education. Is it solely a school districts job to educate parents about technology, social media, digital citizenship, etc? Of course not. As a parent myself, I still need first and foremost be a diligent parent and make time to check my daughters phone, ask a lot of questions, and embarrass her in public as often as possible.
